Common core skills

The minimum requirement for a childcare provider to register themselves on the OFSTED Voluntary Childcare Register (OVCR) is a Common Core Skills and Knowledge Certificate.

This training is split into six modules which cover the following areas:

  • Effective communication and engagement with children, young people and families

  • Child and young person development

  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child

  • Supporting transitions

  • Multi-agency team working

  • Sharing information

There are many learning options for this course including distance learning, online and face-to-face options which each very in price (generally from £60 - £110) and vary in time length (3 hours to a whole day).

This training is normally hosted by nanny agencies, colleges or specific training organisations; be sure to check that the course is accredited by a recognised awarding body.

Beyond the Common Core Skills and Knowledge Certificate there are a number of other qualifications that are recognised by OFSTED. The full list of relevant qualifications can be found on the gov.uk website here.
